Setting up guide goals

Last updated:

Guide goals measure effectiveness by tracking how many visitors performed a specific action after viewing the guide, such as clicking a Feature, viewing a Page, or generating a Track Event. An effective guide results in more users taking the action you're directing them to.

Before you begin

To add a goal to a guide, you must ensure that:

  • You have Guide creator or Guide content editor permissions assigned to your user role.

Add a guide goal

  1. Navigate to Guides > Guides from the left-side menu, then select a guide to open the guide's details page.
  2. In the Guide Goal section, select + Set Goal.
  3. For Define Guide Goal, select which type of interaction you'd like to use for the adoption goal: a Page view, Feature click, or Initiate a Track Event.
  4. In the Target dropdown menu, select the specific Page, Feature, or Track Event for the adoption action. This list includes all tagged events that match your event type selection in the app that the guide is targeted to.
  5. Select Save to create the guide goal. Adoption is measured based on the percentage of visitors who interact with the specified event after viewing the guide.
  6. If funnels reporting has been turned on for your organization, you can create a funnel to measure guide effectiveness within a specific date range, for a specific segment, or related to more events, select Create funnel.

This opens a new funnel report in a new tab where the first step of the funnel is the guide being seen at any step and the second step is the event specified for the guide goal. Update these steps and add more steps as needed. For detailed guidelines, see Funnels.

Frequently asked questions

Is it expected behavior for a guide goal's adoption rate to change after that guide has been set to inactive?

Yes. A visitor who saw a guide before the guide was set to inactive can still interact with the associated event afterward, and that will count toward the adoption metrics.

When does a visitor count as having met the guide goal?

A visitor counts as having met the guide goal if both of the following conditions are met:

  • The first guide step was viewed.
  • The adoption action occurred after seeing the guide.

How is the adoption percentage calculated?

The number of visitors who saw the first guide step is divided by the number of visitors who took the adoption action.

How is adoption calculated for a multi-step guide?

As long as the visitor saw the first guide step, that counts as viewing the guide. If the visitor then takes the adoption action after viewing the guide, this counts as adoption. Viewing the rest of the guide steps is not required.

To count as having met the guide goal, how long does a user have to complete the action after viewing the guide?

There's no time limit for completing the action. As long as the visitor completes the goal action after viewing the guide, they count as having met the goal.

If a visitor is no longer eligible for the guide, will they still count toward adoption metrics?

Yes, as long as the visitor saw the guide in the past, they're included when calculating the adoption percentage.

Can I change the adoption target?

Yes, you can change the adoption target at any time and the adoption percentage will be recalculated and updated retroactively.

Can I make a segment based on the visitors who adopted the action, or see a list of these visitors?

No, this isn't currently possible.
