Dashboards are composed of widgets, which provide visualizations of your data, such as charts, tables, and high-level metrics. Adding widgets to a dashboard allows you to quickly view and compare different figures. Each user can create their own unique dashboards to access the metrics that matter to them at a glance.
To get started:
- From the left-side menu, select Dashboards.
- Select New Dashboard in the top right of the page.
- From the widget catalog, choose what you'd like to have on your dashboard.
Alternatively, you can select Create new in the left-side menu and then select Dashboard.
Define dashboard details
By default, you have a single dashboard titled New Dashboard with an assortment of widgets to help get you started. You can update this dashboard to meet your needs or create an entirely new dashboard. To learn how to create a new dashboard, see Multiple dashboards below.
To rename the dashboard title, select the title, delete the existing text, then enter your desired name. You can also add a colored icon that attaches to the name for further customization. To do so, select the icon to the left of the title, make your selections, then select Apply.
Below the title, select Add a description to describe the purpose of the dashboard or any other important details. The description supports up to 280 characters and displays at the top of the dashboard, as well as in the dashboard catalog. To save the description, select the Save changes checkmark icon or select outside of the text field.
To modify a description, select the text box and make your changes.
Add content to your dashboard
When you create a new dashboard, it starts in an empty state. You can populate your new dashboard with individual widgets.
To add a new widget to a new or existing dashboard, select Add to dashboard in the top-right corner to open the widget catalog.
If you want to move the placement of a widget on your dashboard, hover over a widget to reveal the textured area at the top-center of the widget, then drag and drop the widget to your desired placement.
Modify and share dashboard widgets
Use the icons in the top-right corner of a dashboard widget to resize, manage, and share it.
Resize the widget. If you have a half-sized widget, you see an icon with outward-facing arrows to Make full width. Selecting this expands the widget to the full width of the dashboard. If you have a full-sized widget, you see an icon with inward-facing arrows to Make half widget, reducing the widget width to half the dashboard's width. The text block widget also supports height adjustments.
Manage and share the widget. The ellipsis (...) contains multiple options for further customization and sharing:
- Edit widget. Update the widget name, apply a segment to view information for specific visitor subsets, and access additional editing options based on the widget type. You can also add the same widget to the dashboard multiple times with different configurations—for example, to compare different segments against the same metric. If the widget includes a report, this says Edit report instead and opens the corresponding report.
- Duplicate widget. Create a copy of the widget with the same configuration and name, preceded by "Copy of". Adjust as needed, then select Save to add the widget next to or below the original. Report widgets, like funnels and paths, don't support duplication.
- Manage annotation. Add contextual notes of up to 1,000 characters that display when sharing the dashboard in presentation mode.
- Move widget to top. Place the widget at the very top of the dashboard.
- Move widget to bottom. Place the widget at the very bottom of the dashboard.
- Copy link to widget. Generate a deep link to the widget that copies to your device's clipboard for sharing. The user opening the link must sign in to access it.
- Copy PNG of widget. Copy an image of the widget in PNG format to your device's clipboard for sharing.
- Download PNG of widget. Export an image of the widget in PNG format for sharing.
- Remove widget. Permanently delete the widget from the dashboard. You can recreate and re-add the widget if needed.
Some widgets also have an additional option, located to the left of the resize icon, to open more details in a new tab. For example, Data Explorer and funnel widgets provide an option to view the full report.
Note: If you have the same dashboard open in multiple browser tabs or windows, changes made in one tab might not be saved if another tab overwrites them. To avoid losing updates, we recommend editing dashboards in a single tab at a time.
Interact with dashboard widgets
You can hover over certain widgets to reveal additional information. For example, the Weekly Visitors widget provides more specific details as you hover from left to right.
Some widgets allow you to perform a different action to view more details. The categories in the Browser Usage widget allow you to select the type of browser to provide a breakdown of which versions your visitors are using. Select and drag over widgets that are scatter plots, such as Feature Use By Visitor, to zoom in and view additional details within the widget.
Select Reset zoom to return to the original view.
Filter your dashboard
Most dashboard widgets allow you to apply filters so that you can customize the data displayed in the widget. By applying filters, you can segment and analyze specific subsets of data, which can help you identify patterns and trends that might otherwise be missed.
In addition to widget-specific filters, you can also apply dashboard-level filters that apply to most widgets on the dashboard. This allows you to update the segment, date range, or app being targeted on a dashboard without having to edit every widget individually.
When you apply a dashboard-level filter, the dashboard URL is updated accordingly. This means that these filters are retained when you copy and paste the dashboard URL to share with other users in your subscription.
- To apply a dashboard filter, select Add Filter above your first widget, choose which type of filter you'd like to apply (Segment, Date, or App), then select a value. Repeat as needed.
- To remove an applied filter, select the Delete icon on the filter, or select Clear Filters to the right of the filters to remove all dashboard-level filters.
- Once applied, you can view the filters using the filter icon in the top-right corner of the widget. Hover over this icon to see which filters were applied and if any aren't supported by that particular widget.
Any dashboard-level filters you apply override the filters applied on individual widgets. If you remove dashboard-level filters, the original widget filters apply.
Note: Dashboard-level filters are not supported by all widgets. Paths and workflow widgets are among those that do not support them.
Create multiple dashboards
Multiple dashboards can help you measure a variety of metrics for different parts of your app. To create a new dashboard, select Create new > Dashboard in the left-side menu.
Alternatively, you can select New dashboard from the Dashboards list page.
Note: Unless you share a dashboard with another user, your dashboard is only visible to you.
Once created, enter a name for your dashboard and customize it with different widgets. You can create as many dashboards as you want, as well as rename and delete them as needed.
View all dashboards
The Dashboards page contains all of your dashboards and those shared with you. Select Dashboards from the left-side menu to access the full dashboard directory.
Alternatively, you can select All dashboards from the top-left corner of a dashboard you're already viewing.
All of your dashboards are searchable, and you can filter by dashboards created by you or shared with you. Sort the table columns by name, description, creator, the last person to update the dashboard, and the date and time of the last update. You can also favorite specific dashboards using the Star icon to easily find the dashboards you care about most.
Hover over a dashboard row in the table to share, duplicate, or delete your own dashboards, as well as remove dashboards shared with you.
Share your dashboards
By default, dashboards are private and accessible only to you. To share the dashboard with other users in your subscription, select Share.
Export dashboards
You can export a dashboard as either a PowerPoint or PDF.
- In a PowerPoint export, the file is formatted with one slide per widget, including an image of each widget and a link back to it within the dashboard.
- In a PDF export, the file is formatted with multiple widgets on each page in a two-column arrangement.
Export dashboard as PowerPoint
- Select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then select Export dashboard as PowerPoint to open the Presentation Settings modal.
- Select the widgets you want to include by selecting the checkbox next to each widget, or deselect the ones you don't want to include.
- Select the Export slides button. Use the loading screen to track the progress of your export. You can cancel at any time by selecting Cancel in the bottom-right corner of the modal.
Note: Some widgets aren't available for exporting. You won't be able to select the checkbox next to these widgets.
After file generation is complete, the export file is downloaded to your computer, with the title of the dashboard set as the first slide and one widget shown on each slide.
Export dashboard as PDF
- Select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then select Export dashboard as PDF.
- Use the loading screen to track the progress of your export. You can cancel at any time by selecting Cancel in the bottom-right corner of the modal.
Note: Some widgets aren't available for exporting.
After file generation is complete, the export file is downloaded to your device.
Present your dashboard
Presentation mode provides a dedicated view to present and share your dashboard with others, focusing on one widget at a time. To enter presentation mode, select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then select Present dashboard to open the Presentation Settings modal.
In the Presentation Settings modal, set your preferences, then select Save and Launch. Your settings are remembered the next time you launch presentation mode.
- Rotation Delay Between Widgets. The time interval before automatically transitioning to the next widget. Enter a number and select seconds or minutes.
- Fullscreen Mode. If selected, your presentation uses your browser's fullscreen capability. You can also turn this on or off while in presentation mode.
After saving your presentation settings, a new screen displays your first dashboard widget. As the specified duration elapses, the next widget appears. You can also use the arrows to the left and right of the widget to navigate between widgets.
Annotations added to your dashboard widgets display beneath each widget to provide contextual information during your presentation.
At the top-right of the screen, you can choose to enter or exit fullscreen mode and exit presentation mode.
Duplicate your dashboard
If you have an existing dashboard that's mostly what you need in a new dashboard, you can make a copy of it. You can copy dashboards you've created and dashboards shared with you by other users. Select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then choose Duplicate dashboard.
A new dashboard populates with "Copy of" in front of the dashboard name. You can then update the new dashboard's name, description, icon, and widgets to meet your needs.
Set a home dashboard
If you have multiple dashboards, you can designate which dashboard displays when you log in by setting a home dashboard. This includes view-only dashboards shared with you by other users. Select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then choose Set as home dashboard.
When you do this, the dashboard refreshes and shows Home next to the title. You can quickly access your home dashboard any time by selecting Home in the left-side menu or the logo in the top-left corner.
You can only have one dashboard designated as your home dashboard at one time. To change your home dashboard, go to the preferred dashboard, then repeat the same steps above.
When you set a dashboard as your homepage, it replaces your personalized homepage. To replace your dashboard homepage with the personalized homepage, go to your home dashboard, select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then select Remove dashboard as home.
Delete a dashboard
To delete a dashboard that you've created, select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then select Delete dashboard to confirm. Note that each user has a default dashboard created automatically. If you delete all of your dashboards, a new default will be generated for you.
Only the creator of a dashboard can delete it.
